The State fair of Texas, It was a glorious day, Suzanne and I went to the fair before our showing of Mary Poppins at the Dallas summer musical. The food was fun, the weather gorgeous and tons and tons of people. All out having a splendid day at the fair. While I was sitting in the chair waiting for Mary Poppins to arrive I glanced at Facebook. One of the posts struck my eye, it was from a friend of mines, he simply stated “Praying in front of an abortion clinic. Lord have Mercy” it was followed 25 minutes later by “woman came out of the clinic crying, standing in the parking lot. Pray for her.” and so I did.
I spoke with him today at lunch an asked him how it went, what it was like and in general some of why he was involved. I don’t believe in the right to an abortion, it is killing an innocent child. I can’t understand what makes some feel as strongly for it as a right as they do, but what is even worse I can’t understand why more of us don’t feel as strongly that it is a sin, one that should never be condoned. Don’t twist my hatred of a sin into thinking I hate the people coming and going from those clinics, just like all sin separates us from God, the sin of abortion is like all the others, this one just has tremendous consequences for all involved. Mostly the unborn person who doesn’t get to voice their opposition. None of us is without sin, and therefore we all need a savior.
My friend, who I am not naming mainly because he is not the kind of man who would want the attention to himself but rather to what he working toward, has introduced me to a national effort that is striving to bring about change to this horrible tragedy in a Godly manner. “40 days for Life
is a community-based campaign that draws attention to the evil of abortion through the use of a three-point program; Prayer and fasting, constant vigil, and community outreach.” (from their website)
He and I have talked about what we are led or drawn to do, he kindly mentioned my mission work this summer and working with the youth, while pointing out that this is something he feels strongly compelled to do. I admire his courage for leading his family in a Godly manner by drawing attention to something that too many of us quietly disagree with. I don’t know the answer, but the question is clear, why do we not make more noise over the sin we as a nation are condoning. Go to the website and check out the campaign, 40 days for life, it seems to me that it at least takes a step toward making a difference. This should not be a “catholic” or any one denomination issue, surely none of God’s children can condone the killing of the unborn. Another thing he said that stuck to me was “please don’t ever let it stop hurting…” when we were talking about how we feel about the subject, I think that pretty much says it all. Surely we could all at least consider being a bit more active about our beliefs, we stand pretty firm for many others rights, why not the right to Life. The organization has the right idea, it all starts with our need to pray.
