In my ever expanding quest to place a little order in my life I have a new favorite GTD Tool. Due to my either extremely unusual feature set requirement, or possibly my inability to stay focused thus exacerbating the need for a tool, I have a continuing appetite to find the perfect GTD/GAD tool for myself. This led me to the realization that I should at some point try and record my experience to possibly assist others wandering along the same road to self task performance improvement.
I will endeavor to use this page as a tool to chronolog the experience ,and offer my thoughts on the tool de jour, as well as links to either my review of said Task app review or a link to the developer here on this page.
The Latest or CAU (Current App in Use): OmniFocus with Vitamin-R
Those Task/Todo/Planning apps I have tried:
- Vitamin-R – A nice companion unitasker app that helps me focus on the task at hand from whatever source. I really like the ability to quit certain apps such as my email and twitter prior to going to task, now if the developer would make it start them up again upon completion or break that would be awesome. Nice integration with Omnifocus, things and the Hitlist. You can read my review of Vitamin-R here.
- OmniFocus – (sprang out of Kinkless GTD kinda but that was ages ago) Excellent GTD friendly app, quality iPhone/iPad app kinda pricey though. I own both the iPhone and mac desktop versions. (used it, wanted tags, moved on, came back, wanted tags, moved on, came back discovered perspectives, still want tags… currently here.)
- Wunderlist - Nice simple list manager, I still use this for my grocery list with my wife. It is both web based and a desktop app. Built in Titanium for all 3 platforms. (it’s installed everywhere and has been in use since my discovery 7-9 months ago)
- OneTask – Possibly a good unitasker, similar to Vitamin-R, pretty but not as robust and is a bit more limited in it’s integration. ( less than a day and moved on, sad to say I own it, should have tried the demo first, arrggh Macapp store)
- SpeedTask – Nice menubar based app, but no way to see everything you need to do so I ended up needing something else, moved on after a couple of days. Another of the free cloud task apps, use wunderlist if your needs are this simple. But if your not on Lion and the full screen doesn’t kill the menubar effectiveness it wasn’t all bad.
- iProcrastinate – Move along, didn’t even get all my tasks in. Seemed awkward to me from the git-go and didn’t offer the detailed tracking of complicated tasks I unfortunately needed, though the price was right so kudos to the developer for trying to help a guy out.
- Opus Domini – Nope not quite there, looks like the old franklin planner, but the page turns ended up beating me down and the actual tracking doesn’t seem any better than regular paper. If the developer continues to improve the stability and you just want an electronic daytimer I guess go for it.
- Evernote – Not enough for a task/todo planner for me, but man what an electronic file cabinet. Now with Skitch integration you can easily capture anything you see or can email and keep it in a searchable format. I ended up paying for the service as I wanted integrated search and the ability to upload anything there.
- Toodledo – Web based originally, they now have an app for pretty much every phone. Plus it is better now on the web since they have updated it. (just let my pro account lapse, used on and off for almost 2 years)
- Todo – Web app looks very much like desktop app, syncs well between Desktop and iPhone and iPad but pretty much is toodledo knockoff in regard to how the database looks. (owned all forms and tried to use on three occasions)
- Producteev – Pretty but limited, at least it and it’s syncing are free. (tried to use twice thus far)
- Remember the Milk – Good functionality for a web app, iPhone integration for those who pay the annual fee or are willing to just use the web page. (No extended project tracking capabilities. May flop back to Things…. I did then moved on again)
- The Hit List – An app I got from a Macheist purchase, really good tag capability, NO iphone app yet. (see how long ago I was playing with it, there is one now) Good UI design and easy to use, room to grow for print output though it gets the job done. (Moved on due to expensive syncing)
- Things – Pretty good app, has a few confusing or overlaping features. I love tagging and would just as soon just have a nice interface that woulod revolve around my tags. Though if you like some structure like GTD you may feel extremely at home. PLUS it has a nice iPhone app to boot. (awesome app but the developers seem slow as molasses occasionally, as of 8/19/2011 still no good sync between Mac and iPhone via cloud etc. )
- TaskPaper – Tried and moved on, great concept, just needs better comment or note capability for projects and tasks. The ultimate flex app though, it can manage a list like a beast. Ohh this is where my affinity for tags began, you have cursed me TaskPaper. (simple, if there were integration with Vitamin-R might be a perfect companion, plus that would give iPhone/iPad accessibility, though poor syncing)
- iGTD 3 attempts to use thus far and have moved on, Funny so has the developer, he now works with the Things crew. (no longer available)
- Midnight Inbox 2 attempts to use, relies too much on my using my email for gathering, moved on. (tried it, moved on, tried the new beta, seemed to rigid to me still and I have moved on)
- Journler Great info manager, but not quite what I need for GTD (See macjournal as for pay equivalent) UPDATE: use evernote and you will never not be able to get at your notes again, well at least till they get bought or something)
- VoodooPad Still use as subject related information manager. Cool app, just not GTDish enough for me. Odd it looks better now than when I originally wrote this, I think I just haven’t found my stride yet on this app. (still haven’t)
- GTD with Apple Stickies full how-to with what I did at the link. (No longer available ever with the swayback machine
) - Kinkless GTD (see above)
- Updated Hipskine (I know longer have the minezamac domain so this entry is lost except for the swayback machine) See review from the link from the wayback machine. For posterity here’s a PDF of the article 2006ish info.
- d3 or d cubed a tiddlywiki implementation Early personal GTD attempt, neat app, used as self contained wiki, it was replaced with voodoopad though for my needs. (No longer my post as the page was never permalinked, so no swayback machine)

Great article! I bought Things a year ago, and also read the GTD book, and it’s like Things was only a partial implementation of GTD, but I had nothing to base this hunch on, well, until I read your article! I just bought Omnifocus, I’m looking forward to getting things done. Thanks!
